Roaring Fork Nature Trail

Roaring Ford Nature Trail located in Gatlinburg is a hidden jewel for photography.  You could spend the day on Roaring Fork and barely scratch the surface.  The fall color is beautiful.  In the spring, wildflowers are everywhere.  There are several old farmsteads including the Bud Ogle cabin.  There is a trail that leads behind the cabin and through the woods and here you will find large flowered trillium, rue anemone, dwarf crested iris, showy orchids and more.  The flowering dogwood next to the cabin makes for wonderful color in the spring and the fall.  There are numerous stream shots on Roaring Fork and the moss and lichens on the rocks makes for great color especially in May and June.  Grotto Falls is located on this driving trail.  If you plan to hike to the falls, get there early because the parking lot fills up fast.  This is a waterfall that you can walk behind which gives an interesting different angle to photograph.  But if you are not there early, keeping people out of the photograph may be a problem. You will lose all good light by mid morning.  We have also seen turkey, deer and bear in this area.  In fall of 05, we saw momma bear and 2 cubs on main road just before the Bud Ogle cabin.  On our trip in April of ’06, we were able to watch the same bear and cubs up close and personal for about an hour.  Bears, as most animals, tend to be creatures of habit. The chances of seeing them in same area again are good.  Cubs usually spend about 2-3 years with the mother.
